This tool converts a project's estimated effort — measured in working days — into an actual calendar deadline, starting from a chosen start date and automatically skipping weekends. You can also add a buffer percentage on top of the raw effort estimate to build in contingency for the delays and interruptions that almost every project encounters.

Why working-day effort and calendar deadlines are different things

A '10 day' project estimate almost always means 10 working days, not 10 consecutive calendar days — but deadlines are communicated as calendar dates, not day counts. Converting between the two by hand means manually skipping every weekend that falls inside the project window, which gets error-prone once a project spans several weeks. This calculator walks forward from your start date, counting only weekdays until it reaches your total effort, and returns the actual calendar date that lands on.

Why the buffer percentage matters

Software estimation research and project management experience both point to the same pattern: raw effort estimates are systematically optimistic, since they rarely account for meetings, blocked dependencies, scope clarification, or simple underestimation. Adding a buffer — commonly somewhere between 15% and 30% depending on how well-understood the work is — before committing to a deadline is a standard risk-management practice rather than padding.
